Yesterday, Congress passed the ‘‘Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act,” an Act that incorporates significant provisions to strengthen the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) ability to regulate cosmetic and personal-care products - inclusive of being able to recall harmful products, ensuring consumers know where and what types of facilities beauty products are manufactured in, and ensuring companies can provide safety and justified research on the ingredients that they are using. This is the biggest change to personal care product regulation since 1938.

Years ago, after learning how unsafe most personal care products are in the US, I was determined to find safer products for myself, and those I cared about. I was blown away by Beautycounter’s commitment to advocacy, changing the under-regulated personal care products industry, and mission of getting safer products into the hands of everyone. For 8+ years I’ve been a Beautycounter client and affiliate and during this time I have lobbied at the state level numerous times for personal care product safety reform. Some of these meetings were met with positive interaction from state representatives, others left me discouraged.

If you know me in real life, you know that I encourage those I know to send emails, texts, and letters to their representatives, and also businesses, demanding change. I firmly believe in the power of advocating for ourselves, and on behalf of those who feel they have no voice.

While the fight for more regulation is hardly over, this news has been 80+ years in the making. Gregg Renfrew, Beautycounter’s founder, and Lindsay Dahl, Beautycounter’s former Head of Mission, deserve major praise for their vision, efforts and resilience in fighting for this for the past 10 years. I assure you, this monumental milestone would not have happened without their tenacity.

The attendees were all minority-owned businesses in the health & beauty industry. The work I do in toxins and ingredients consulting isn’t always easy, or a light topic, but I know it’s my purpose and I’m so honored to be a part of this important work.

The lawsuit is focused on a key ingredient, Titanium Dioxide, that will be banned in Europe effective August 1 & was banned in France in 2020. Note that the ban is only as a food additive.⁣

Titanium dioxide is used to whiten and provide opacity to products (see list below) & accounts for over 70% of the production volume of pigments worldwide. It is also used in sunscreen products as a UV filter.⁣

𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐃𝐢𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐝𝐞?⁣
- It is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen - meaning it's possibly carcinogenic. ⁣
- It causes lung cancer in animal studies involving inhalation
- Europe has banned it as a food additive after reviewing thousands of studies showing that is is linked to genotoxicity. Genotoxicity refers to the ability of a chemical substance to damage DNA, the genetic material of cells, which can lead to carcinogenic effects⁣
- Titanium dioxide, when orally ingested, accumulates in the body⁣

I've been quiet on the 'gram the past few months. With converting a school bus into a tiny home (@itsourbusadventure ) keeping up with my Beautycounter and Scout & Cellar businesses, offering 1:1 consults, taking toxins courses, and running a large Facebook group for female-identifying and nonbinary entrepreneurs, it's been buuuuuusy. And tiring!

I wanted to let you know I'm always here to answer ingredient and product questions, help with Beautycounter orders, wine recommendations, and nerd out on all things toxins, ingredients and sustainability. It’s been in the news this week as sunscreen products found to contain benzene have been voluntary recalled.⁣⁣

𝘚𝘰, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘻𝘦𝘯𝘦?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
High level, the benzene in these sunscreens is a contaminant as a result of the manufacturing process. It won’t be on the ingredient label. However, benzene is a widely used industrial chemical. Found in crude oil and gasoline, it’s used to make plastics, adhesives, detergents, pesticides & more.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
While most benzene exposure comes from the use of petroleum products, it is also produced by forest fires and volcanoes. Benzene evaporates in soil and water so it is possible for it to contaminate drinking and bath water.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Benzene is absorbed through the skin as well as inhalation. It has been classified as a known human carcinogen for decades. It’s been linked to leukemia, anemia, weakening the immune system, damage to reproductive organs and infertility.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We can’t completely avoid benzene because some exposure is out of our control, however, it’s important to limit exposure to toxins in the ways that we can control. For example:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
- Don’t use gas stoves! Benzene is emitted even when unlit.

- When pumping gas, don’t breathe in the vapors.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
- Wear a mask when outside in areas of forest fires or working with benzene-containing products.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
- Purchase personal care and cleaning products that don’t use petrochemicals.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
- Further, purchase personal care products from companies that batch test for contaminants. To my knowledge, Beautycounter has the strictest batch testing standards in the industry. Its expensive to batch test so that’s why most companies skip this step.

If you’ve looked at food ingredient labels before, you’ve seen “natural flavors,” but what are natural flavors? They are flavoring agents that come in liquid or powder form that food manufacturers add to their products to enhance the taste. The ingredients that make up natural flavors don’t need to be disclosed, which is concerning.⁣
⁣
For example, these containers have warning labels on them because they were flammable. Some liquid natural flavors are even suspended in ethyl alcohol or glycerine, which doesn’t need to be labeled! Companies can also “dump” other ingredients into “natural flavors” to make their ingredient list shorter.⁣
⁣
Though they are derived from natural sources (plants, animals, etc), the source of a flavor or aroma doesn’t necessarily match what it’s intended to be. Think about bananas! Banana popsicles don’t taste like bananas. They use molecules from other sources to create this flavor. This means there can be a potpourri of molecules and compounds in your food and you’ll never know what it’s made of!⁣

I've been a bit quiet the past month as I've been leading workshops, recording podcasts and getting ready to bring this bus home. My boyfriend and I will be converting it into our tiny home and then hitting the road!⁣

𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝. Many buses don't get their full life lived in school systems. They "retire" around 150-200k miles, but most go well over 300k.⁣
⁣
𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. We can design this specifically for our needs (work, lifestyle, a dog and 2 cats).⁣
⁣
𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬. Many materials used in building, including RV's, from wood to furniture to fabric contain toxic chemicals like phthalates, formaldehyde, mercury and flame retardants.⁣
⁣
𝐏𝐫𝐞-𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝, 𝐮𝐩𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐝, 𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝. We plan to use as many materials as possible that had a previous life. The design industry is high in waste and we don't want to add to that impact.⁣

𝐃𝐈𝐘. I'm excited about building this ourselves, learning new skills, and getting creative!⁣

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is one of the world's best-known labels for fabrics tested for harmful substances. To receive OEKO-TEX certification, the material, zippers, buttons, coatings, and threads, etc. are tested and proven to be free of regulated and non-regulated substances known to be harmful to human health. You can find OEKO-TEX certified materials on baby items, clothing, home textiles and decor. Manufacturers/companies will often share that they are OEKO-TEX certified, but you can also check for the label in the next picture (swipe right).⁣

Sulfites, or sulfur dioxide, are both naturally occurring in foods, and used as chemical preservatives and sanitizing agents in processed foods. They prevent bacterial growth and the browning of foods.⁣

Sulfites naturally occur in wine, black tea, eggs, vinegar, peanuts, broccoli, kale, strawberries and coconuts, among other foods. However, they’re also chemically added to wine, beer, dried fruit, snack foods, frozen produce and many more processed foods. Basically, there’s no shortage of sulfites. The good news is that foods and beverages containing sulfites are required to clearly state it on the package, in the ingredients list or otherwise. On packaged foods, you’ll find them listed as: sodium sulfite, sodium metabisulfite, sodium bisulfate, potassium bisulfate, and/or potassium metabisulfite.⁣
⁣
If you find you are nauseous, have headaches or shortness of breath after consuming many of the foods mentioned above, you may have an allergy or sensitivity to sulfites, which impacts a small percentage of the population. However, sulfites are more commonly blamed for hangovers, especially when it comes to wine. The truth is mass produced wines have a lot of crap in them, including chemical sulfites, so it could be a number of things contributing to that hangover. With that said, I recommend finding wines with no added sulfites because we don’t need more chemical additives in our bodies, and make sure to pay attention to your other food labels, too!⁣

That means that a lot of toxic chemicals are in your bottles of multipurpose cleaner, laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid, among others. Since these cleaners are sprayed and therefore inhaled, wiped on kitchen counters and then go down our drains, it’s especially important that their ingredients are clean with no impact to humans, pets or the environment.⁣

For example, 2-butoxyethanol is the key ingredient in many window cleaners & gives them their characteristic smell. It belongs in the category of “glycol ethers,” a set of powerful solvents that don’t mess around. According to the EPA, in addition to causing sore throats when inhaled, glycol ethers also contribute to narcosis, pulmonary edema and severe liver & kidney damage.⁣

It’s important to note that there is a lot of greenwashing in this category. Words like “green” in the product title, natural or biodegradable don’t mean they have safe ingredients.
